Winners of TIAA Bank’s Be the Change Scholarship Announced
Jacksonville, FL — Jan. 14 2022 — TIAA Bank announced the winners of its “Be the Change” Scholarship at the City of Jacksonville 35th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast presented by Florida Blue. The virtual event to celebrate the legacy of the civil rights leader included special guests such as Mayor Lenny Curry.
This year, the bank awarded four $5,000 scholarships to local high school students. Students from 14 area high schools submitted essays with examples of racial injustice in their communities and ideas for how to make a difference. The winners include:
- Ashley B. — Jean Ribault High School
- Mykal B. — Jean Ribault High School
- Joshua D. — Jean Ribault High School
- Natavia R. — School for Accelerated Learning and Technologies Incorporated
“It’s an honor to celebrate the legacy of Dr. King and the work that continues decades later,” said TIAA Bank Chief Banking Officer John Pataky. “TIAA Bank is proud to recognize these future difference makers right here in our community.”
Be the Change was introduced in 2020 by TIAA Bank’s parent company, TIAA, as an effort to combat racial injustice. The program was designed to educate about present day inequity and inequality and encourage people to come forward with ideas on how to promote social justice, inclusion and diversity.
